This year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is rewarding 49 models with the highest level of safety, more than double the number of models that received the "Top Safety Pick+" rating in 2020. An additional 41 vehicles received the IIHS "Top Safety Pick" award in 2021, although the organization has tightened its standards over the past year. Of the 90 vehicles awarded for 2021, Ford and Lincoln received five.
Sounds small to you? Wait and see how it takes to get one of these awards. Because the evaluation is serious, and the vehicles must meet the standards precisely.
Both awards require high scores in all six IIHS crash tests: low driver/passenger front overlap, moderate front and side overlap, roof strength and head restraints. Winners must be available with frontal crash avoidance that achieves a superior or advanced score in the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.
Safety award winners must be available with good or acceptable headlights. The "plus" designation is awarded to models that have good or acceptable headlights for all trim levels and assemblies.
The IIHS uses a two-tier award system beginning in 2013 to gradually introduce new requirements that may be difficult for all manufacturers to meet immediately. Over the years, the IIHS has used Top Safety Pick+ to introduce new crash tests and collision avoidance criteria before incorporating them into the requirements of the regular Top Safety Pick award.
As a result, five Ford vehicles are among the safest on the market. That's something to brag about. You can see for yourself by coming to Desjardins Ford to test drive one of our vehicles... but we don't suggest that you test the safety systems, though!
