Ford Explorer, the sizeable American 7-passenger SUV, adds a sporty-looking rear-wheel-drive version equipped with the EcoBoost 2.3 engine to its already impressive lineup.
Inspired by the smaller Edge ST-Line, the Explorer ST-Line is positioned between the XLT and the Limited. It will appear in the North American market, and at Lincoln Heights Ford, before the end of 2021.
The ST-Line is distinguished from other versions by identifying features such as a black grille, a black Explorer logo on the hood, black headlights and taillights and 20-inch aluminum wheels. The interior trim with ebony black leather seats comes with black Miko synthetic suede. A sport steering wheel combined with red contrast stitching completes the package.
Another difference is the engine block. While the ST version has a 3.0 twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine, rated at 400 horsepower, 415 lb-ft of peak torque, with all-wheel drive as standard, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the ST-Line uses a 2.3-litre EcoBoost I4 engine rated at 300 horsepower, 310 lb-ft of peak torque.
Other changes are also on the menu for the Explorer line. Customers looking for luxury with ST power can choose from the King Ranch and Platinum trim packages. Both of these trim packages use a 365-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.0 V6 engine.
In the 2022 version, both will increase power to 400 horsepower, come with standard technology packages such as a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system and multi-contour seating.
The off-road-focused Timberline has also been added to the lineup by offering a second-row bench seat instead of bucket seats. Only the ST-Line and Timberline versions will have steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the 2022 model year.
The company says the new model is aimed at customers "who prefer the bold styling of the Explorer ST but don't need the ultimate performance of the Explorer ST." Ford added a similar ST line to the Edge in 2020, alongside the Edge ST. As expected, the 2022 Ford Explorer ST-Line will go on sale by the end of the year, with a starting price of around $51,059.
